FREE UK VEGETABLE GARDEN PLANNER

Free vegetable garden planner for UK beginners

Starting a vegetable garden in the UK doesn't have to mean a large plot. A few pots, a sunny patio or a small raised bed can be enough. Use our free vegetable garden planner to match beginner-friendly crops to your space and get an estimated seasonal growing plan.

1. Choose the right growing space

For a balcony or patio, start with containers that have drainage holes. A sunny spot suits crops such as compact tomatoes and dwarf French beans, while some leafy crops can tolerate partial shade. Raised beds can make soil management easier, but they are not essential for a first harvest.

2. Pick a few beginner vegetables

Salad leaves, radishes and rocket are useful first choices for containers. Parsley and Swiss chard can also suit small spaces. If you have plenty of sun, consider compact tomatoes or beans once the weather is warm enough. Start with vegetables you enjoy eating rather than trying to grow everything at once.

3. Plan when to sow in the UK

UK sowing times vary with weather, variety and local frost risk. Many salad crops are sown in spring and summer, while tender plants such as tomatoes need protection from cold. Autumn is often useful for planning, tidying and growing suitable hardy crops. Always check the seed packet and current local conditions.

4. Work out what your garden needs

Before buying supplies, check your sunlight, usable growing area, water access and drainage. For containers, allow enough depth for roots and use suitable compost. Keep a simple shopping list and avoid overcrowding: a few healthy plants are better than too many struggling ones.

5. Keep track of progress

Make notes of sowing dates, watering, first seedlings and harvests. This helps you learn what works in your own garden. Our free planner provides a starting point; the optional £9.99 Garden Success Pack adds an interactive garden, crop tracking, a 12-month calendar, garden jobs, shopping checklist and diary.

Common questions

Is the UK vegetable garden planner free?

Yes. The starter planner is free to use. The more detailed Garden Success Pack is an optional one-off purchase.

Can I grow vegetables without a garden?

Yes. Many vegetables can grow in pots, troughs or containers on a patio or balcony, provided they have suitable light, drainage, water and enough root space.

Does the planner predict exact frost dates?

No. Growing windows are approximate UK-wide guidance, not a live weather forecast or postcode-specific frost prediction. Check your local forecast and seed packets before planting tender crops outdoors.

General growing guidance only. For detailed cultivation information, see the RHS guide to vegetables in containers.
