Starting a Small Raised-Bed Vegetable Garden in the UK
A single raised bed can produce useful harvests without turning gardening into a second job. Start with a few reliable crops and a realistic seasonal plan.
Choose a suitable spot
Most vegetable crops grow best in a sunny location. Place the bed where you can reach the centre without stepping on the soil, and make sure water can drain freely.
Choose a few beginner crops
Try salad leaves, radishes, beetroot and carrots. Peas can also be rewarding if you provide suitable support. Select crops you actually like eating.
Sow in small batches
Rather than sowing every seed at once, sow modest amounts of quick-growing crops at intervals during their suitable season. This can help spread harvests.
Adjust for your local conditions
UK sowing dates are guides, not promises. Soil warmth, frost risk, rainfall, exposure and the specific variety all influence when a crop can be started safely.
Plan your little growing space
Choose your growing space and sunlight to get beginner-friendly crops and an estimated 12-month sowing calendar.
